This year, the TUFS African Studies Center was in charge of the Japanese Executive Office for the South Africa – Japan University (SAJU) Forum, which was held from Thursday 23rd – Friday 24th of May 2019.

This was the fourth time this forum was held, at which over 200 Japan and South Africa-based researchers and businesspeople gathered to discuss the current situation and prospects of collaborative research between the two countries. Aside from university personnel, this forum was also attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Japan Science and Technology Agency, the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Institute of Developing Economies Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO). Representatives on the South African side included those from the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Higher Education and Training.

TUFS Vice President MATSUKUMA Jun gave the opening address at the forum, in which he expressed his expectations that this forum will not only contribute to research cooperation, but will also be used practically as a platform to deal with various global matters. In addition, at the session on the second day of the forum, Director of the African Studies Center, TAKEUCHI Shinichi, gave a presentation on the exchange student system and research exchanges at TUFS.

This forum, which featured presentations by a large number of participants, also provided an opportunity for researchers from both countries to meet new collaborative research partners.
